Nearly two years ago, my son 10 year old son Will had a stroke… out of nowhere, due to a malformed nest of veins, of which we were unaware. Holy Spirit Catholic Church hosted the eighth Catholic-Orthodox Ecumenical Gathering on May 14. Archbishop Wilton Gregory and Metropolitan Alexios of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta officiated at the service. In celebration of the Year of Faith and a Marian Year in the Archdiocese of Atlanta, the theme of the gathering was the Most Blessed Theotokos, the Mother of God. Dr. Demetrios Katos, Dean and Professor of the Hellenic College, Brookline, MA was the keynote speaker and offered a meditation entitled “Scriptural Meditations on Mary.” Hymnody and music was provided by the choir of Holy Spirit and the Chanters of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral. In addition to clergy from both Churches, members of the Order of Malta, the Order of the Holy Sepulchre as well as Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople were in attendance. Msgr. Edward J. Dillon, Pastor of Holy Spirit, welcomed the congregation and noted the significance of the event in the quest for Christian unity.
