A Letter from the Pastor

Dear Parishioners:

As a pastor, I find that I have two main challenges each summer which are somewhat related to each other.

The first is to help parishioners “keep Catholic” during the summer months. There is something about the relaxed pace of summer time where cookouts, concerts, ball games and beach trips offer frequent excuses for missing Mass. It’s far too easy to roll over on a lazy Sunday morning and just sleep in or convince yourself that you are on vacation, so why go to Mass?

A Special Pilgrimage to Lourdes by Jen Penn

Nearly two years ago, my son 10 year old son Will had a stroke… out of nowhere, due to a malformed nest of veins, of which we were unaware. I can’t tell you how many times I thanked God for my two healthy sons. It was something we didn’t take for granted. Will spent the first week in a coma fighting for his life. I spent that time praying the rosary, praying to Mary to put her arms around my baby to make him feel safe and loved.

Holy Spirit College Graduates Six Students by Fr. Paul A. Burke

The Feast of St. Matthias (May 14) saw the Graduation of Holy Spirit College’s Class of 2013. Alexandra Richards was awarded a B.Phil degree in Philosophy and Theology. Yolanda and Fernando Munoz, Michael Pham, Michael Verlander and Deacon Allen Underwood were awarded a Master of Theological Studies degree. In his homily at the Baccalaureate Mass, Archbishop Wilton Gregory spoke about the example of St. Matthias. He noted that this apostle is often overlooked because he was chosen to take the place of Judas Iscariot.

Catholic-Orthodox Ecumenical Gathering Focuses on the Mother of God by Fr. Paul A. Burke

Holy Spirit Catholic Church hosted the eighth Catholic-Orthodox Ecumenical Gathering on May 14. Archbishop Wilton Gregory and Metropolitan Alexios of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta officiated at the service. In celebration of the Year of Faith and a Marian Year in the Archdiocese of Atlanta, the theme of the gathering was the Most Blessed Theotokos, the Mother of God. Dr. Demetrios Katos, Dean and Professor of the Hellenic College, Brookline, MA was the keynote speaker and offered a meditation entitled “Scriptural Meditations on Mary.” Hymnody and music was provided by the choir of Holy Spirit and the Chanters of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral.  In addition to clergy from both Churches, members of the Order of Malta, the Order of the Holy Sepulchre as well as Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople were in attendance. Msgr. Edward J. Dillon, Pastor of Holy Spirit, welcomed the congregation and noted the significance of the event in the quest for Christian unity.

Supporting Vocations Through Prayer by Kim Schulman

In the life of the Church, May and June typically mean that it’s Ordination time, and this year is no exception. Holy Spirit’s own Deacon Tom Shuler will be ordained to the priesthood next Saturday, June 8th at the Cathedral of Christ the King. He will then celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving here at Holy Spirit on Sunday, June 9th at 11:30 a.m., with a reception following in McDonough Hall. All parishioners are invited to attend.
