Making Lent Real for Your Family
Looking for ways to honor the Lenten season beyond giving up your favorite sweet treats? This year, make a special effort to mark this season of reflection in your home and as a family throughout the 40 days. Some ideas include:
- Place a bowl of water in a prominent place in the home along with baptismal candles and/or photos from each family member’s baptism. As a family, reflect on your baptismal promises and the importance of these promises in your life.
- Make an “appointment” to spend faith time as a family. Read Bible stories and share with one another the concerns from your personal prayer list. Spend time in prayer as a family.
- Spend time helping people in need. Volunteer as a family to work in a soup kitchen or other service project, donate excess clothing and toys to people in need, visit an elderly neighbor and offer to help with household projects.
- Go to Stations of the Cross as a family and spend time reflecting on the sacrifices Jesus made on our behalf.
- Create a Lenten family practice of being more loving toward one another. Make a point of complimenting one another, praising one another for successes and saying “I love you” on a frequent basis.
A number of resources are also available on the internet. One example, http://www.americancatholic.org/Newsletters/CU/ac0108.asp provides ideas for creating a theme for your Lenten reflections and ways to carry that theme throughout the season.
